PULSE HouseNumber 5615 Stanton Avenue was built in the first half of the twentieth century, probably as housing for the family of a middle-class manager in the steel industry. It is an elegant old place, with wooden floors, elaborately carved wood trim and plaster ceilings, and beautiful stained and leaded glass windows. With its eight bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and generous ground-floor common rooms, it was the perfect choice to house PULSE participants. PULSErs are provided with private rooms with furnishings similar to a college dormitory: a bed, a closet or wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a desk, shelving, and a chair. PULSE pools participants' earnings from their work placements to cover the cost of utilities and provide a shared Internet connection. PULSE House is in Pittsburgh's Highland Park neighborhood, a few minutes' walk from the green quiet of Highland Park itself, with its public swimming pool, tennis courts, and hiking trails. Situated almost on the corner of Stanton Avenue and Negley Avene, the house is located along several major bus routes and less than half an hour's drive from downtown. |
